Hi!

The play link in [2] is a .swf file not .mp3 file.
Downloads and streams of the show are available in MP3 format.
* Please join us as we thank the TAL production crew for their
reporting in "When Patents Attack!", and ask them to make the show
available in Ogg Vorbis

Could the data included in the SWF file be MP3 data?
Or is the SWF file used to point the user to an MP3 file to play?

The show audio files they point to in their RSS feed --
http://feeds.thisamericanlife.org/talpodcast -- are MP3 files.

For example, the patent show URL is:

http://www.podtrac.com/pts/redirect.mp3/podcast.thisamericanlife.org/podcast/441.mp3

Also, the text they use in that feed says (in part) "In mp3 and updated
Mondays.".

Indeed, their MP3s are only available for a week. Show archives are
in iTunes, which is a whole 'nother battle.

The SWF file is some kind of player that loads the MP3 file via some
protocol (HTTP). SWF files are binary and usually contain non-free
software. The code in them is compiled (bytecode) ActionScript, a
variation of ECMAScript. It is similar to JavaScript, another ECMAScript
variant. Even with free software plugin like Gnash, the user have to run
the non-free bytecode.
